One of my favorites, Highland’s Gaelic Ale is an Asheville staple in the world of beer. You can never go wrong with a Gaelic Ale!

Southern Hemisphere Harvest Ale by Sierra Nevada
I tried a half-pour of Sierra Nevada’s Southern Hemisphere Harvest Ale at Asheville’s Thirsty Monk, and they’re not kidding about the freshness of the hops. A bit too hoppy for me, this beer is much more like an IPA than a typical pale ale. It’s a special beer, though, blending seriously-fresh hops from New Zealand [...]

Blue by Sweetwater Brewing Company
Years ago I gave Sweetwater Blue a shot, and I remembered that it tasted overwhelmingly like blueberries, as if they poured some concentrated blueberry right into the beer at bottling time. So on recommendation from Jeff, I decided to give it another shot; he swears it doesn’t have too much blueberry flavoring in it.

Enlightened Black Ale 1554 by New Belgium Brewing
This black ale, in my opinion, is pretty damn good! The aroma is smooth, not overpowering, with barely the faintest smell of hops. Nice head, nice smoothness to the pour.

A few thoughts after my fourth home brew experience
I’ve brewed four home brew batches so far, and I’ve bottled two of them. I’m starting to really see the bigger picture when it comes to brewing, and I’m really starting to feel a like it’s time to get a bit more experimental with these batches. At this point, I’ve brewed:

What is Dry Hopping?
During the brewing of my first batch of home brew, I heard the term dry hopping. I didn’t remember what this really meant, so I looked into it a bit.

First home brew: A simple dark ale from malt extract
Last Saturday night I was finally able to brew a batch of beer! I’ve been looking forward to this for quite a long time. For the last few weeks, I’ve been reading up, researching, and asking loads of questions to prepare myself for this first batch. It also helped that my brewing buddies had brewed [...]

Budweiser American Ale by Anheuser-Busch
I tend to enjoy this American Ale each time I have it. It’s got a great head, a nice deep amber color, and a wonderful aroma. It’s very well-balanced, in my opinion, and the aftertaste is real mellow. It’s a good day beer, and it’s a great one to drink considering the price and the [...]

Fat Tire Amber Ale by New Belgium Brewing
I find this beer toasty, and well-balanced. It’s yummy, with friendly and refreshing aromas, but if it’s not super fresh, it tastes a lot different and quickly loses most of its zeal.
It’s much better out of a glass, without question. But as I drink it I feel there are almost too many flavors thrown in [...]
