Yet another IPA for the record, Highland’s Kashmir IPA contends with the best of them. It pours with a decent head and a clear, golden-brown color. The aroma is thin but with an abundance of fresh hops.

Gaelic Ale by Highland Brewing Company
One of my favorites, Highland’s Gaelic Ale is an Asheville staple in the world of beer. You can never go wrong with a Gaelic Ale!

Tasting of my Second Home Brew: Smoked Porter
So I finally got a chance to taste my second batch of homebrew! It’s a Smoked Porter, a recipe from Alex Buerckholtz, owner of Hops and Vines, a brew supply shop in West Asheville, North Carolina.

Southern Hemisphere Harvest Ale by Sierra Nevada
I tried a half-pour of Sierra Nevada’s Southern Hemisphere Harvest Ale at Asheville’s Thirsty Monk, and they’re not kidding about the freshness of the hops. A bit too hoppy for me, this beer is much more like an IPA than a typical pale ale. It’s a special beer, though, blending seriously-fresh hops from New Zealand [...]

Blue by Sweetwater Brewing Company
Years ago I gave Sweetwater Blue a shot, and I remembered that it tasted overwhelmingly like blueberries, as if they poured some concentrated blueberry right into the beer at bottling time. So on recommendation from Jeff, I decided to give it another shot; he swears it doesn’t have too much blueberry flavoring in it.

Enlightened Black Ale 1554 by New Belgium Brewing
This black ale, in my opinion, is pretty damn good! The aroma is smooth, not overpowering, with barely the faintest smell of hops. Nice head, nice smoothness to the pour.
-
Mothership Wit (Organic Wheat Beer) by New Belgium Brewing
The Mothership Wit beer pours super light! It almost looks like lemonade. The aroma is loaded with citrus and spice, and the head isn’t bad, but I’d expect a bit more from a wit beer.
-
Pabst Blue Ribbon (PBR) by Pabst Brewing Company
Well here it is, the original Pabst Blue Ribbon Beer! This one’s a classic and a favorite, especially among the beer drinkers in my town, Asheville, NC. It’s always on special and never lets you down!
-
Widmer Hefeweizen by Widmer Brothers Brewing
The Widmer Hefeweizen sure is tasty! It’s got that beautiful rich, cloudy, yellow color and texture that you want out of a good hefeweizen. The head is nice and frothy, the aroma’s very refreshing, and the aftertaste is great, lingering for just the right amount of time, with a great balance of sweet versus wheat.

Newcastle Brown Ale by Newcastle Federation Breweries LTD
The one and only! Indeed, they’re not lying about with slogan! Newcastle Brown Ale is an old favorite of mine, and it always hits the spot!
-
Dark Starr Stout by Starr Hill
Dark Starr Stout was much better than their IPA, but again, I’m not much of an IPA fan. Thankfully, the stout was rich enough to wash away the lingering pang of my tired over-hopped throat.
-
Northern Lights IPA by Starr Hill
I had an opportunity to drink a couple of brews from Starr Hill Brewery, including the Northern Lights IPA (India Pale Ale) and the Dark Starr Stout (see this post on the stout).
-
Summerfest by Sierra Nevada Brewing Company
Seasonal brews are so iffy, so I generally approach them carefully. Sierra Nevada’s Summerfest beer had a very salty smell, almost beach-like, not so much sandy skin-display beaches, but more of just the beach or coast in general. And of course, this beer smells of pacific hops.

Bison Brewery Sampling: Chocolate Stout, IPA, Barley wine
I went up to Bruisin’ Ales for a sampling of a few Bison Brews, including their Chocolate Stout, IPA, and Barley wine.
-
Budweiser American Ale by Anheuser-Busch
I tend to enjoy this American Ale each time I have it. It’s got a great head, a nice deep amber color, and a wonderful aroma. It’s very well-balanced, in my opinion, and the aftertaste is real mellow. It’s a good day beer, and it’s a great one to drink considering the price and the [...]
